The photo gallery has been updated with 43 new photos. We've had a lot of excitement today with our first chick of the 2011 season hatching this morning at 9:38 am. Our chick's name is MKD. The next chick could hatch Friday or Saturday. We're looking at past photos to identify if the first egg laid is the egg that hatched today. Hopefully we 'll find unique blotch marks on the eggs to identify which one hatched.

MKD took it's first taste of fish just under two hours after hatching and has eaten twice since freeing itself from the egg shell. Jasper continues to re-inforce the nest while delivering fish to Bea and their first chick. Of course Bea keeps a pine cone close to where she sits, occupying herself by nibbling on it.

In your photo, is the dark portion of the lower right egg hanging down from the rest of the egg? My recollection is that only one of the three eggs had such a dark end.

This is really interesting! Thanks for the photos and updates.

Hey Peter,

Yes the dark section of the shell is broken off below the main section. If you look at the photo gallery you may see more of the differences between the three eggs. Two of the eggs look very similar.

What great pictures in the photo gallery. I can't believe how we all worried that the couple didn't know how to put a nest together, or were not filling in the edges like they should, etc., etc. And now look what they have done. It's amazing. Thanks for the really wonderful photo gallery.

Am I seeing ruffled feathers on the back of Bea and a large white loose feather near her? Maybe there was a fight overnight?

No fight, it's just very windy and her back was against the wind. She recently turned sideways so it wasn't blowing directly behind her.

While feeding fish to the new chick, I only saw one other egg a few minutes ago? What has happened to the second unhatched egg?

The second egg has spanish moss on top of it from Bea and MKD moving around.

Cute closeups. I think MKD is asking his siblings to come out and play!

Really fabulous photos in the gallery .. little MKD is as cute as a button! Sure can put the food away - hope when the siblings come out to play he is not a bully!
Have to agree - for first timers Bea and Jasper have outdone themselves despite all our dire predictions.
Had to smile - if birds had facial expressions - Jasper's viewing his offspring would have won the prize!

LOL...I agree DB. It seems Jasper is looking at the first chick and wondering what in the world it is.

The chick seems a bit weak this afternoon, or is this part of the natural cycle of things?

6:40 PM...another egg is hatching! It is broken in half, unless I am seeing things...

Second egg appears to be broken open, and both parents are checking it out?

Or is that a portion of the first egg?

I popped in to look at 1045pm Thursday night and I think I was able to watch the 2nd egg hatching.
Looked like parent with chick half out of egg. Exciting if I caught it right.

to moderator

sorry my previous post was for a freeze frame of something that must have happened earlier as I realized the webcam is not live after 8pm so egg may have hatched before then, if indeed it was the 2nd egg hatching. I will assume the post will be removed.
