The third egg has a hole in the shell and appears the chick did not survive.  Even if the chick did hatch we wondered how it would compete for food from its older siblings. The egg will most likely be discarded by Bea as the two chicks get older.

GV and RJ have grown significantly after hatching less than a week. As their appetite grows so will Jasper's job of catching fish for them.

Sorry the third chick did not survive, but guess that's how nature works. Would have been a tough beginning for the new little one. We'll enjoy watching the two chicks in the nest and hope all goes well for them. OK Jasper--let's go get some fish.

Vivian,

Agree withyou about the third chick. It would have been very difficult for it to compete for food. Jasper just brought in a nice flounder.

Good for Jasper. Let's hope he can continue with his fine fishing!

So sorry about egg #3. The two chicks are so adorable. It is going to be great to watch them grow over the next few months!

Natures way of the strongest surviving. It would have been hard for all of us to watch the third chick compete for food against GV and RJ. The odds of the third chick surviving were not good.

Good feeding at 7:01 AM. Chicks are growing fast, and look fairly equal in size.

Good morning Peter,

Completely agree with your comment. So far the chicks are playing nice with each other. Probably due to them hatching within half a day of each other and their equal size.

Did she just break the egg apart? I only see the white lower 1/2 clearly.

Did she just break the egg apart? I only see the white lower half now.

No, that egg shell is from the second egg. The other half is to the left under some sticks.

The hole in the third egg appears to be the size of a quarter.

Has the nonviable egg been pushed to the side? It looks like it might be the one at the bottom of the picture with a hole in it. Would Bea or Jasper have moved it so soon?

Yes, I can see now it is the third egg at the bottom of the screen. Thanks for the close up. Can almost see a chick inside.

Hey Vivian,

Yes, the third egg has been moved towards the camera, away from GV and RJ.
